India, Africa, and other 3rd world countries are getting alot of help from us Americans, especially the famous ones, while in America, we have homeless people, starving kids, disease among our population, neglected and abused kids, senior abuse, and people who barely make it by. So I guess my real question is, Why are the American people left to suffer when American Politicians and other famous people give aid to others, How can we really take care and help other countries if we cannot help ourselves?

that is a damned good question ,and thanks for asking it, it does seem like these movie stars etc would appreciate the ones who put them in their high positions more and help our own people first , then help others , our politicians also seem to forget who put them in office and the good life, and they don't gave a hoot about the ones who gave all of this to them they sell us out and give our money away and in many cases to people who have a higher standard of living than we do,

To be fair - I guess they feel their dollars will go farther there. The American dollar goes pretty far in Africa or the Urkaine, not so far here where there is no postive rate of exchange.

But personally I feel they do it for publicity and so everyone thinks they MUST be some nice person and not a ritch b****, it's good PR for them. Many are liberals and just are not all that into America or its values.
Bill Gates is in a different class than those people he is a business man not a celebrity, and he does a lot here. I think the questioner is asking more about holiwood types. I respect Bill Gates and Bono, as they have really accomplished a lot but not so much a lot of the others.

I'm not really sure. I think one way to start is to stand up as a nation and ask our elected officials how they feel about aid to nations outside our own. If they say they want to help this place and that place, we should not vote for them. I think we need to tax the heck out of the rich and priviliged! I think people who live below the poverty level should not have to pay any taxes. Our nation is going broke because the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. As hard as it may be we need to stop supporting those who don't support us. If famous person Joe Smith wants to save some poor little 3rd world country then we need to stop seeing Joe Smith movies and buying Joe Smith tee-shirts. What they all seem to forget is that we used to be a 3rd world nation when we first got started. We helped ourselves. They need to do the same. There are more people at the lower levels here in the states that if we all stopped supporting these people and their "noble" intentions, they will be down on our level where they can see it all for themselves.

Celebrities and such donate much more in the US than they do overseas. The library in my small town was funded by Bill Gates. Most things, like Opera setting up a school in Africa isn't necessary in the US, plus you can buy a lot more with a million dollars in Africa than you can in the US. Moreover, we live in a global society and people overseas make our things or else we would be paying $300 for a toaster. But we also need customers for our things or else we'll go broke. They won't have money if they don't have an education. American's have no excuse, our eduation is free. Homeless shelters are free. And if you're worried about these things, why would you vote republican?

To be fair about it. A lot of big name stars are helping in New Orleans only they are not getting the press. Oparh has spent a lot of money having the hurricane victims in New Orleans and on the Gulf Coast and not one peep about it in the press. But she opens a school in South Africa and it is World news.
Now about Brad and Angeline when they were in Africa it was front page news every day. But as soon as they went to New Orleans to help the hurricane victims it was like they dropped off the face of the earth.
And there are a lot more big name stars beside those three, spending their time and money in New Orleans helping the hurricane victims and you never hear a word about it.

Celebrities famous for support to other countries are also known for their support of causes in the US.

We do need to continue with foreign aid, but I do agree that it would be nice if government programs were more generous to our own population.

But of course, that would be *gasp!* welfare, and people seem to think that's a dirty word.

Because if they help a poverty stricken country, or say they help a distant far away country, they don't have to answer if anything goes wrong, and they don't have to actually do anything, cuz it's in a poverty stricken distant country where doing any little nice thing is great for those people and gives them great PR.

How do you know they don't help people in the US? It just makes the headlines when they are helping other countries. Be fair.
