1.The most important way is , of course, to use an anti-virus that has good detection rate and is kept regularly updated. Good doesn't necessarily mean Norton and McAfee. There are many free anti-viruses, which are pretty decent too.
2.Never download anything suspicious from file sharing networks, like Kazaa, Limewire etc.
3.Never open suspicious mails. Mails sent to Yahoo and AOL email addresses are scanned by anti-virus software, but there is a good chance that it might miss out that particular virus.
4.To make things sure, scan your computer once every 5-10 days for viruses.

What You Can Do To Protect Yourself
Install Anti-Virus Software and Update it Daily! Always leave it Functioning and Enabled!
Make sure your Anti-Virus Software is set to monitor your E-Mail Program that you send and receive E-Mail with!
Do not temporarily disable your Anti-Virus Software as it is too easy to forget to re-enable it!
Always keep your computer updated with the latest Security Patches! Microsoft releases them frequently as infected E-Mail Attachments may attempt to exploit program vulnerabilities.
Do not open attachments unless you are absolutely certain of the sender and the contents!
