I hear from a lot of people that France owes us for something that happened 62 years ago. Ignoring the fact that the British contributed a huge amount to operation overlord, do we owe France for saving our butts in the revolution through supplying us with the majority of our munitions, as well as troops, ships and other help that America would've note existed without?
If France owes us for 1944, do we owe France for 1776?

Moonshot: Nations don't do things out of generosity, FDR didn't want to get into the war, Hitler declared war on him as a sign of good faith to Prime Minister Tojo, if it weren't for that, we would have let England do it

Fital69: In case you can't tell, that's a woodcut of Odin, not my photograph. I'm not old, and maybe when you get a little older you'll know how to tell the difference between a photo and a woodcut.

I've used that argument a lot with people, but it just seems to fall upon deaf ears, and they squeak out a stupid little response like "FREEDOM FRIES!"...

Okay let's be serious about this topic.
As a french i quite upset by a lot off comments made on this Q/Rby americans folk i assume.
I can't understand why you seem to be so good or bad minded.
Life is not so simple, we are not in a five years old school.
It's not either we are with you or we are against you.
France does not owes usa so much that french can let you do anything (like Iraq, Koweit, etc...) and just say well done !
There's no valid reason France or any Country will just follow you while you are making crazy, stupid action.
Did anyone discover any chemical weapon in Iraq ?
Look at what's going on in Afghanistan, are you sure the result is worth what as been done and all the killed people ?
I have nothing against usa people but since a while i'm very upset with the bush family business/policy (isn't that strange that w bush consultants are all from oil business ???)
and i sure you realise that we can't approuve everything just because you were part of the allies that saved France during WW2.

France brought about the new age of thinking we have today. The french broke down the old class rules that had been set in place since civilization began. Liberty is a French word. The statue of Liberty was a gift from France too.
But a lot of the French in WW2 collaborated with the Nazis too. It's not black and white, the French don't owe a cent to the Americans

No, you douchebag! France helped us in the American Revolution and we freed them from National Socialists. I would call it about even. It's just a shame how far the once-proud nation of France has fallen. They used to be a valued ally.
The only difference is: we have maintained our independance from the British crown, whereas the French has fallen to Socialist oppression, this time by their OWN hand!
Yes, the Nazis (National Socialist German Workers Party) were in fact...in EVERY way, shape and form...Socialists.
Hitler himself said: ""We are socialists, we are enemies of today's capitalistic economic system for the exploitation of the economically weak, with its unfair salaries, with its unseemly evaluation of a human being according to wealth and property instead of responsibility and performance, and we are all determined to destroy this system under all conditions"

OK I'll be serious. I believe that France warned us. They were being friends when they warned us. Friendship only goes so far though. As far as one nation oweing anything to another nation, you can forget it. It's every nation for itself, when it comes to war.

Seems to me in all fairness we're square with france. Cons who say these kinds of things don't think it through, or are ignorant of history.

We can't stand that anyone disagreed with us over Iraq. France is an easy target. We are the bully in school who picks on the weakest kid = pathetic.

France didn't help us out of generosity. They had an enlightened self interest: The ongoing rivalry with England.
