A PDF is more like a printout of what you were working on in other wordprocessing programs. For instance, you would type something in Word and then "print" it to a PDF. PDF programs get installed as a printer. When you print your document, you choose your PDF maker instead of your printer and it will ask you where you want to save the file.

A good site is:

www.pdf995.com

This is shareware. An ad pops up everytime you "print" a PDF, but it's a small price to pay for free, fast PDF files. Of course, you can always pay the $9.95 to make it go away.
