I read a book about the evolution of dogs and it talked about a theory of neotony. It said that people are drawn to dogs (specifically puppies) because they remind us of human children. I would think that it would be beneficial to humans evolution because dogs can be trained to hunt which helped people survive, and not to sound sick, but they could be used for food and clothing if necessary. Sorry that it is only about dogs, I would think that the only other reason would be companionship and I really do not see any evolutionary advantages to just companionship.

I took a social psychology class in college. I remember a lecture where the professor talked about it. He said that we are attracted to the young of every species because they have characteristics (large eyes, etc) that remind us of our own offspring. This of course brings out our nurturing instincts and we feel the animal is cute.

how much have animals done for humanity down the millenia. (scientifically/medically proven) health benefits/pest control/groundwork/guarding/helping us to hunt food etc. & you ask about evolutionary benefits? besides, we live & think by more than instinct. so even from an abstract/aesthetic viewpoint, we (or those decent & worthy among us) feel a certain fulfilment from bestowing aid & kindness to animals by dint of our drive to care & nurture. besides, why wouldn't we feel that animals are "cute"? they are.

when we started looking at other species-and looking beyond the basic preditor/prey relationship our world expanded exponently-dogs help us hunt-elephants, camels, and horses help us travel-and cat's-ummmm.... kill lots of stuff for their own amusement, (I guess this must serve some sort of purpose-maybe it makes us feel better about ourselves in comparison),-at any rate the ability to 'relate' to other animals has served us well, and besides that- they are cute!!!-

Non-violence is the goal of evolution.Until we extend our circle of campassion to all living beings we are still savages.
