I've read about how lap tops piggy backing may be unethical but that since there is no chance of getting caught.. then people keep doing it with no worry. On the other hand people with cable or whatever else interenet connection can be caught.. so we should just get laptops and then it solves the problem? Cousin has a laptop and is piggy backing on the neighbors and downloading stuff.... I thought he would get caught, but after reading stuff on net about this, it says nobody(police etc) really gives a damn.and nothing gets done about piggy backers.

So then, ,just get a laptop and enjoy?

If ppl leave there network unsecure it's their fault for being ignorant. It's prob best if you do piggyback to tunnel encrypted. If the ISP want to come down on you they can. The police can get a warrant for people with the wifi range and check MAC addresses.

So research IP and MAC spoofing, piggybackin using an encryption, and onion routing. The cops hate onion routing.

Downloading torrent files with copyrighted content is illegal. For example, downloading Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone would be illegal. If the content of the torrent file is something like an eBook of Youth, by Issac Asimov, which is legal to distribute under the Gutenberg Project, it's not illegal. So the answer to your main question would be it depends on what you are downloading. Downloading a torrent is file sharing. It downloads parts of the file from people that are uploading it. The person downloading the file is downloading it from a bunch of other people that are uploading the file.

it's actually illegal, but it's usually impossible to fund out who's piggy-backing on your network. But more and more people are tech-smart and protect their network. It's quite hard now to find a good reliable Wifi network which is not protected.

About the old myth than nobody can find you if you connect wirelessly: when you connect to the Internet, both your IP address and your MAC address are transmitted. The IP address most likely changes every time, but the MAC address is hard-coded in your computer and is like an ID card of your computer.

Ask yourself how you are going to feel when the police bust you or someone you care about for downloading kiddie porn because some little creep was sitting next door or on the driveway downloading it.

Also dont forget, wifi is a two way connection - how long will it be before a seemingly innocent wifi connection is deliberately exposed to lure people into connecting...
