It's only a sin if you're greedy. If you're rich, you should use some of your money to help other people. If you spend it entirely on buying useless things for yourself, it could fall into being sinful. Of course that doesn't mean you should give out all of your money to the point where you yourself are broke, but you should definitely use it to help people. Pursuing money is also fine, since, as you said, you could use the money to help people and provide a better life for your family. As long as money doesn't take up your life and become something of utmost importance, it's probably not sinful.
