Good for you, Holmes (and nice research on your part, Skull) - excluding steam driven wagons it was indeed Karl Benz who created the first internal combustion automobile. However this was in 1885, not 1898.

A Catholic priest named Father Ferdinand Verbiest has been said to have built a steam powered vehicle for the Chinese Emporer Chien Lung in about 1678. There is no information about the vehicle, only the event. Since Thomas Newcomen didn't build his first steam engine until 1712
first vehicle to move under its own power for which there is a record was designed by Nicholas Joseph Cugnot and constructed by M. Brezin in 1769

The 1st in the world was made by a french guy named Joseph Cugnot. It was a steam powered car made in the 1700's.
The 1st Gas powered car was made by the Germans. It was designed and built by Karl Benz. The car was named the Benz, which is now known as Mercedes Benz. It was made in the 1800's.
The first American car came in the early 1900's. It was made by Henry Ford and the car was called the Ford Model T. Its engine was designed and built by the German's untill the 1940's when Ford started making there own engines.
