Yes, they get about 16 inches. A healthy goldfish will grow 5" each year. Fish do not grow to the size of their tanks. You probably have not spoiled them, if anything they are suffering. Commons need 20 gallons per 3" of fish. They produce a lot of ammonia in the water which is a toxin. In small tanks some people think they stay smaller because of stunting. Stunting is when the outside of the fish stops growing but the internal organs continue. Eventually the fish dies. Most fish just keep growing though. Its like putting a great dane puppy in a small crate--its not going to stop and eventually its going to grow out to all the sides of the crate and become deformed and die. There's no stopping growth just because of a small space.

Commons and Comets are two different breeds of goldfish. The Commons are usually solid gold/orange with shorter tail fins. The Comets may be all orange, but can also have orange and white with a longer tail fin and Shubunkins are the orange/red, white and black ones. Goldfish will grow to whatever size their species dictates they should grow. Commons, comets and shubunkins can grow to as much as 18 inches long. You may be looking at commons and comets at the store, but then you may be looking at koi too. If you look closely at them, they have little whiskers on their mouths. Goldfish will never grow up to be koi. These are a separate species that can grow to 3 feet. The growth rate depends on feeding, water quality and size of tank or pond. If kept well, Commons and Comets can grow quite quickly. But, just be glad they're growing. That means they're happy and healthy! So, yes, it's very well because you've spoiled them I'm sure! Good for you for taking care of your goldies so well!

The common goldfish will grow to about half foot in length if housed in a large enough aquarium and will take about five or six years to reach maximum size. You have been doing everything right for a year, the only question now is the size of the tank.Three goldfish to grow out will need at least twenty and preferably thirty gallon aquarium.
Good luck!

The big ones you see are prob Koi.
But yes comet gold fish can grow very large and live a long time. I have about a 10 inch one in my pond right now.
The rate of growth depends on how big their tank is (the bigger it is the faster he will grow) and how much you feed it.
edit: comet goldfish are not only the white and gold ones. They come in a variety of colors (white, black, silver, red, orange, orange and white, orange white and black.. ect)
