They had money to spend but the free-agent market was pretty thin after the top couple of guys. I do agree that Mariners fans shouldn't get to excited about Jeff Weaver, Horacio Ramirez and Miguel Batista.

Process of elimination? I mean, if they try to just sign every bad pitcher, ONE of them has to pan out. Unfortunately, the way they do it- I think it's just cheaper signing one good pitcher...

Seriously though, they just had a lot of guys turn over from the rotation in recent years and found themselves with about 3 rotation spots open. I don't think Batista was an awful signing, at least he has sparks of brilliance now and again, plus he was affordable. Weaver, in theory, also has upside- but he mainly flops bigtime. And Ramirez? At the price of a potential closer? That was just dumb.

So, basically, they couldn't see any way to make a contender so they just made a bunch of do-nothing, expensive moves, and hoped. They would have been better off spending their 10 million setting up a farm league in Ghana.

The Mariners are going with the philosophy that you never have enough starting pitching. By inviting many potential and former starters to Spring Training, they are going to get a look at a lot of arms and who knows, they might just stumble on someone who is putting it all together finally. By going with quantity, they are hoping that someone out of all the ones they're looking at will come through with a good year.

Well, give them credit for at least not offering a big amount of money to Gil Meche. The market was thin, but I think they should have tried to get someone a little better than the guys they got, maybe a Maddux or Suppan, but oh well. I think Jeff Weaver is going to really suck.
