yes it's possible. betta's don't need a lot of space.

3 gallons is a little tiny to be divided. maybe keep the 3 gallons just for the male? he'd love the space. theres always a risk with divided tanks that, if the divider isn't tough enough, the betta can push through, or even jump over. and if one fish gets something nasty, it would be passed on to the other fish too. and if you felt adventurous, you could pick up a 10 gallon tank (can be found dirt cheap) and heavily decorate it with lots of hiding places and have a nice little betta girl sorority. these sororitys have to be 5 fish or more though, girls can get pretty feisty, so as long as theres a few to spread out the aggression and lots of places to hide, they should be fine.

It's possible. Might work pretty well too if it's filtered and heated. I'd watch them though if I were you, in case they're spending too much time flaring at each other or one of them is too intimidated of the other. If they are ready to breed, the male will build a bubble nest and the female will get a bit chubby with eggs, then start displaying dark vertical stripes on her body to signal the male. You can remove the divider then and stay there to watch because you'll have to remove the female immediately when she's done releasing all the eggs or the male will kill her. The male stays with the eggs and will take care of the nest.

Definitely keep them separated, whether you want to breed them or not. Males do not only fight with males; they will also get agressive with any other fish that are in "their space." Each betta has a different personality, so some could possibly cohabitate with other fish, while others would surely attack anything else. To stay safe, keep them separate. Even females will bicker with each other when first placed together, in order to establish a "pecking order."

I was told you do not need a divider to separate a male and a female in one tank...they cohabit fine. It's the males that must be separated...they will fight until one expires. And yes, it is possible a male and female will try to breed....the male building the bubble nest....if the conditions in your aquarium are conducive. I would suggest getting a book from your local library if you are seriously wanting to raise bettas, or even just keep them happy and healthy.

Yes it's possible. They can't breed unless they're on the same side of the divider, but bettas are good jumpers (wink, wink) and there's space under those hoods for jumping!

I read that you were only supposed to put them together for breeding purposes and then to separate them because the male could hurt the female.

You won't need the divider if they are male and female, after they get hot for each other.

that's fine cause they wont fight each other because they are opposite sexes. they will breed though
