I have had that job before, and all I did was answer phones, reply to emails, accept rent from tenants, make coffee, clean up, file, go to the bank for them, pick up their laundry, make sure the listings are up to date online and in the window, thats pretty much it.

A lot depends upon the size of the office and the length of time you stay on that job. A beginning receptionist anywhere is answering the phones and giving messages, and that could be on paper or by computer, which would mean you need to have keyboarding skills and the ability to learn their software program. If the messages are given in person you must develop discretion, manners, etc.

After you have been on the job a while you will be given additional responsibilities. Your superiors have to get confident that they can count on you for not missing phone calls, staying late if requested, and keep your lunch and breaks according to their rules.

You're right. There's a lot of training involved and you have to be a people person and great with numbers. You can't be afraid of calling perfect strangers on the phone, etc.
