I have a 2WD 1998 Dodge Ram 1500.
I know it's 2WD drive because there is no way to shift it into 4WD and there are no axles going to the front wheels, so logically you would think that there would be no 4WD light, but...
Sometimes when I drive it in the rain, the 4WD drive light starts to blink on and off (not constantly; it flutters... If you know what I mean...). It doesn't normally do it when it's dry, but it has before. Normally it does it when the roads are wet.
What could be causing it to do this?

There is a connector in the wiring harness that probably plugs into the 4WD transaxle if it is equipped. My thinking is that the connector is getting wet since it's underneath the car, causing the light to intermittently blink.
The 4WD idiot light is present because it's not cost effective to make two different panels or wire harnesses.

Some thing to the console lights might be wired wrong giving you an improper indicator light. The "warning" lights might be from another Ram (with 4+4) dash.

Ther is a sensor for when the back wheels spin, that it engages 4wd if you have it, just for those situations, that must be why the light goes on eventhough there is no 4wd.

Could be that it has what's known as a "limited slip differential", and when it engages you might see that light. Just a guess though..don't take it as gospel.
