I can't blame the Royals. At least they didn't put the revenue sharing money back in their pockets like the Florida teams. So what if they over spent to bring in Gil Meche and Octavio Dotel.

It depends on what their goal was. As far as fielding a contending team, definitely foolish. They are not going to be competitive for a while. Also, they were complaining about Sweeny's "albatross contract" but now they get Meche's "albatross contract." If they want to see how to really do this, they should look at the Twins- who picked up Ponson and a couple other down and out vets with potential, for practically nothing by baseball standards. If one can pay 3 guys under a million dollars for a year, and one pans out- you're doing better than having one guy for 11 million doing the same thing.

On the other hand, I think the Royals are just trying to show that they will spend money. At this point in time, the Royals have been so bad for so long that they are willing to spend money and actually invest in the team. Ultimately, you have to overpay for a few guys and field a winning team before you can get people for market value again.

Yes, it was awful. It reminds me of their signing of Mark Grudzielanek. One mediocre signing doesn't mean anything.

The Royals remind me of the Tigers a few years ago when they tried to make a splash by signing Jason Johnson. Well, Johnson stank and so will Gil Meche. It wasn't until the Tigers signed some GOOD free agents like Kenny Rogers, Pudge, etc and developed their farm system that they became a really good team. I think thats what the Royals will need to do to become competitive again.

i think gil meche is very overpaid and i think that other than that we traded away maybe more talent then we brought in as far as fielders go but for pitchers even thoughwe paid too much to get gil we vastly improved in the rotation and bullpen
and our prospects are the best in the majorsbilly butler and the big dog you know who alex gordon will be a monster
the royals are only going to get better and better 3or4 yrs they will win their division
and thats the truth

No. Not at all.

You have to remember that KC has been awful for a while and there are very few FA's that want to go there. KC has to over-spend on FA's for a while until Dayton Moore gets them where he wants.

I see Kansas City is where Detroit was. They (KC) finally have a good GM and is taking all the necessary steps to get his team to contention. It wouldn't surprize me to see KC competing for that division in 3-4 years.

Sometimes you have to over-pay for average players. It lets other players know your team is serious about winning.
Once KC gets to be competive they will no longer over pay for players.

I think they payed way too much for Meche. They could've found a better pitcher, or multiple ones for that price.
