A hybrid vegetable is basically a vegetable that has been specially propagated from two different parent plants, to get a desired outcome. By cross pollinating two plants with desirable traits, you get a hybrid plant which may produce larger veggies, higher yields, more disease resistance, etc etc. These two parent plants, pass their good traits to the hybrid plant, making for a stronger generation. Hope this answers your question.

Billy Rae has it. A hybrid vegetable is a vegetable that is propagated by cross pollinating two plants with the desired trait. Or by planting the seeds from the fruit of the plants with the desired trait.

For example, you want to grow red bell peppers. But you only have green bell peppers. You notice some of the peppers have red in them. By taking the seeds from the peppers with red in them, and planting them, you'll get more peppers with red in them. By planting the seeds from the fruit of the pepper plant that has the most red in it, eventually, you'll create a sweet pepper plant that can produce a completely red bell pepper. It takes a certain number of generations before this is accomplished.

This is evidence of evolution, although it is man-made evolution. The chances of this happening in nature are rare. By controlling the process, the evolution can be acheived much faster.

A hybrid vegetable is one that has been genetically modified to have the qualities of two vegetables, like the orangefruit we are now seeing in the grocery stores. They are part grapefruit and part orange.

Plant & seed producers are always looking out to introduce new varieties of plants & vegetables, hoping to introduce new & better qualities called traits, this is done by cross pollination & the resulting vegetable or plant it is hoped will bear vegetables better ,larger or of better shape, colour or texture than the parent plants.Fancy names are often coined for these hybrids combining part of each name of the contributing parents.
