That would depend upon whether or not you believe in free choice or not. Do we humans have options; or is everything preordained? This probably isn't the answer you were looking for.
I believe that it could have been avoided, because I believe that humans have free choice. Sorry, but there it is.

world war one was caused solely on the fact the the ottoman empire and the German Empire was too big and the other European nations were worried that these nation would be unstoppable after the allied with each other the 2ND Reich was an economic militate political giant the strongest nation in Europe and the proved many times they were the best with especially in the Franco-Prussian war and with a strong chancellor Otto Von Bismark the Europeans feared the 2ND Reich.. since the ottomans controlled so much land the had many cultures living in their land which is why Franz Ferdinand was killed because so many people were mad because the were controlled by a foreign power. the Russians and the rest of Europe now had the perfect excuse to stop the central powers before they got any stronger Russia claimed that they were protecting the int rests of the Serbs who lived in the ottoman empire and the other European nations were willing to join in the fight. this war made no sense and cost millions of lives it just left Europe a wasteland and also caused world war 2.

it was inevitable. The reason is all the countries had treaties with each other that if they got into a war all there allies had to help them. So if any small country went to war all of Europe would be at war. Which is what happened.

Even if that guy did not get assassinated some country would have gone to war eventually and it would have happened.

Euro trash will always war with each other and that is why most of them came here to expand their cultures and they thought they would go back and forth like yo yo's and then own the world. You know breathing room? However if you go to www.history.com and look it up you will get the gist of it in detail. It is a great site, audio/visual as well as great coverage with some accuracy as well. Better than school books that are out dated or brainwashing mechanisms. Look up the Huns? or Frederic the Great? then Turk/Russia? and Ottoman Society these wars now are a continuation that we should have left behind after WW II but Patton and Mac Carthur were not allowed to finish the job? eh?
Too many money deals just like now! WW I was the beginning of the Hun terror and admittedly responsible for the horror after and WW II. We should have bombed them and not Hiroshima?

Tensions arose between Prussia (former German empire) and Austria/Hungary. Since the early 1800's these two empires had been wary of each other, each growing closer and closer to the other in politics and in diplomacy. When Archbishop, cousin of Austrian king, was killed, it was blamed on Prussians, and all hell broke loose. Due to events that had been occurring for over 200 years, WWI was inevitable.
