Well take my word for it,rail travel is'nt cheap.In fact if you travel 1st class(which you'll amost have to)you have to have a reserved seat.The plane is cheaper.When you weigh up all the pros and cons

I haven't taken this route by train. However, based upon the geography of the region, there is some spectacular scenery - especially when you get close and north of Milan. The Dolomites (Italian alps) and lakes of northern Italy are rugged and very beautiful. The mountains are dotted with charming villages.

It's not so bad. 7 hours or so. Most have a change or 2 (often in Milano) but there's one that goes direct... leaves at 7:42 and arrives at 14:32. Looks like you do need a reservation, though. I bet it would be beautiful.
