ok, i have my avast anti virus installed but the notification area from the lower right corner of the task bar displays the security center icon marked in red and it says "anti virus might not be installed". And when I open the security center, I see in the "Virus Protection" label and it indicates "not found". Why is it like this? How come windows did not detect my avast anti virus?

Because Windows Security Center is crap. Open it up and go to Recommendations under Anti-Virus and select 'I will monitor this myself'. Or just disable the annoying thing by doing the following:
Start > Run > type 'services.msc' without the quotes and hit {Enter}

Scroll to find the Security Center service and double-click. Click the 'Stop' button and in the drop-down box select disable. No more annoying popup. Disabling this service causes no harm to the computer.

If you have recent copy of the software try a reinstall but first remember to uninstall it from your "add or remove program" found in the control panel. You can also do a system restore if you know the approximant date it went bad.
Also if its trial offer or subscribe to type and you haven't kept up the payments you must show them the money!
And go to this site and download the best free anti-spyware on the Web:

Have you updates your Antivirus Definitions.

Windows Security Center would consider the Antivirus working only when it has the latest Antivirus Definitios.

I have installed Norton Antivirus and it gave the same message saying no antivirus installed. When i updated the Antivirus Definitions the warning disappeared.
