If your foot is on the floor, just leave it in top - they are programmed to shift at the optimum time when under full throttle. The gears are for steep hills, to keep the car from too much up and down shifting. If you really want to select your gears yourself - buy a stick shift. It really is the only way. With an auto, if you try to make it shift before it wants to, it will ignore you. If you wait until after it wants to, it is slower, and will be jerky 0 not a good thing for auto transmissions (they tend to break after that happens a few times.)

to go forward, put the selector in 'd'(for drive), to go backwards, put selector in 'r'(for reverse), it will shift automatically, that is why it is called an AUTOMATIC transmission. Attempting to manually shift an automatic will drastically reduce the life of an automatic transmission under the conditions you obviously wish to operate under. If you like to shift, buy a vehicle with a MANUAL transmission

you're not gonna want to try to shift it at all, let the transmission itself do the work. the car can tell if you want it to push out a lot of power from the engine or not. don't try to shift it with the 1,2,3 because that's not what those gears are made for.

Why shift? put the dang thing in the drive and go. If you want to shift, go get a manual transmission. don't try to mock it in automatic

I think you must mean a "standard" or manual transmission.
Most people just shift an automatic into drive and leave it there unless they drive in very steep hilly conditions.

no. just put it in D for Drive, and let the trans do all the work. unless you are gunning the engine, it wont reach redline during normal operations

Just put it in D and go; don't worry about manually shifting it - that's why it's called "automatic".

Just put it it D and drive. No need to switch to other gears, unless parking or going in reverse. 1,2, and 3 are only meant for under 30mph.
