There were about 12 major death camps. The worst one was Auschwitz. About 6 million Jews and as many as another 1 to 4 million people in addition to that were treated terribly and exterminated systematically by the Nazis. You can read Jane Yolen's "The Devil's Arithmetic" to get a basic idea of what happened, without it getting too graphic or disgusting. Some truly terrible, Satanic things happened however. Some war orphans later left Europe and came over to places like Canada. Those who survived the Holocaust did not ever forget what happened. When living in California, I heard from a Holocaust survivor before, David Faber, who wrote the book "Because of Romek," referring to his brother who helped save his life. The holocaust is the most shocking event to have occurred during the past century because the nation that committed the atrocities was thought of as a civilized nation. One might think that a difference between a barbaric group of people and a civilized group of people is that this behavior would not occur among the civilized group.

That it did, doesn't speak well for the longevity of the human race especially since nuclear bomb technology is available to many nations and many nations are run by crazy leaders filled with anger and hatred.

Holocaust literature is extensive and there have been many award-winning movies too. You can view these movies for free from your public library.

I know tons about the Holocaust.

The Holocaust was a period of time during world war 2. Hitler wanted to exterminate the Jews because of their religion. It was a cruel and horrible time when over six million innocent people were murdered. First they only had to wear a star on there clothes when they went outside. But then they had to give all their valuables to the Nazi government, but they said they would get them back when the war was over. Then they couldn't go into any public areas, for penalty of death. The Jews were then sent to ghettos. Small places where over hundreds of Jews were sent to live. Nazi's were around the perimeter, and would kill anyone who stepped foot outside. Then they were herded into cattle cars. The Jews had to endure days without food or water, with 100 people to each small car. People would die of heat, exhaustion, ans suffocation- but this was only the first of tests. When the trains stopped the families were herded out, and a Nazi official would select people into different groups, they didn't know it at the time, but he was choosing people who were able and ready to work, and he sent them to the labor camps. The others, including all elderly people, and anyone under the age of 16, was sent to the gas chambers to be executed. The people who did survive the selection were sent to the camps, and starved to death and sent to live in blocks. Many died for sabotage. Nazi's would periodically line them up face into the walls, and just shoot whomever they wanted. It was a horrible time and when the people who survived went home, there was no one there, and everything wasn't the same. I could go on for days talking about this.
