The scars were caused by a disease called Lupus which Seal suffered from when he was a child. The particular strain from which Seal suffers causes blistering especially around the facial area, which when ruptured cause deep scarring.

I've always wondered that too. is it some sort of scar from teenage acne or maybe he got burned in the face or someone beat the crap out of him on the streets before he turned singer? I'll be watching your question to see if anyone comes up with a good answer.
