They traded Garcia for monetary reasons and they traded McCarthy because they liked Danks and Masset more than him.

1) Garcia - He was a free agent at the end of the year. As a season ticket holder I watched Freddy stink it up more than a few times last year. I think getting rid of him was a good deal. It was not about getting Floyd, it was about getting Gio Gonzalez. He was the player that Philly wanted in return for Thome ( and of course Rowand). So for Garcia, we received back they player we sent for Thome.
2) McCarthy - I don't understand why so many were in love with this guy, except that we had "McCarthy is the next great hope" shoved down our throats. Facts are facts - last year he proved that he cannot pitch out of the bullpen. He proved that his fastball has the tendency to be flat.
Here are that numbers that should let you know why this trade was made - Last year McCarthy in 84 innings gave up 17 home runs, 77 hits, and 33 walks. He blamed it on "not being comfortable out of the bullpen". So this guy can only start? Bad sign
And Danks - the forth best prospect in baseball. Unless you think that McCarthy is the 4th best prospect in baseball, than this is a great trade.
It is almost a certain that Buehrle is gone after this year. I for one want someone there to replace him as a 1 or 2 starter. That is what Danks is, while McCarthy is only a 3 or 4.

The Garcia thing seemed to be that they were trading an established starter who would be a free agent for someone they had more control over in coming seasons. So sort of a way to keep payroll level in coming seasons.
McCarthy? I have no idea. Personally, I don't think their rotation is as deep as they think it is, nor will they be able to keep everyone around. On the other hand, the Rangers have a habit of making awful trades (buy high, sell low)- so maybe the White Sox are actually fleecing them.
Heck, maybe the White Sox traded him so McCarthy would struggle for a couple seasons in Arlington, then trade an aging hitter for him, haha.

I keep asking myself WHY the heck they dealt McCarthy!?! I thought they dealt Garcia to free up a spot for McCarthy, then, BANG, they trade McCarthy! I wish I had an answer for ya, but I really didn't get those series of moves...
Ken Williams must have fallen in love with Danks and Floyd and gotten tunnel vision, meaning he had to get them for some reason. Maybe he'll end up looking like a genius if those two work out, but for now, I agree w/ you, it was odd.

cause ever since givin Frank Thomas trouble and makin him leave after winning WS in 05, Kenny Williams keeps tryin to showoff makin moves like Matt Millen and tries too hard to get all the credit for winning another WS, cause he thinks since they won in 05 it'll be so easy to win 10 more in his career as chi sox gm
