I plugged everything in and the computer recognizes there's internet, but won't let me access it.

The two computer icon on the bottom do not have a red x on it.

if wired

Plug everything in
Turn on computer
Go on internet

If wireless
Open the wireless network control pannel
View wireless networks
specify the network that you want to connect to
enter encryption key if necessary
Go on internet.

You weren't specific enough in what you were tiring to get help with.

All I did was plug in the network cable .... it worked instantly.
No configuration of any kind whatsoever.

You shouldn't have to do much of anything.
Start IE & see what happens....
