Hi there!
I repair Speedometers for a living and that would be very easy to do actually.....for me!
First of all you must remove the Speedometer Cluster from the vehicle and disassemble it.
The Speedometer has a digital odometer in this case and not a mechanical odometer. The Digital odometer is run off a large Integrated circuit on the main board. Locate the leg that drives the odometer and sever the path in any fashion you like.
The odometer mileage is also stored in the main ecu or computer. If you disable one or the other or try to interchange the two: you will set off an error code in the cluster as well as the digital odometer display.
Oh and by the way did i mention that it is not legal to DEFRAUD someone by altering the odometer reading. Otherwise you can do whatever you want with your own private vehicle.
i hope this helps. Good Luck!

Depending. You could go inside the paneland take the speedometer cable off from the panel. You might be lucky enough to stick your hand behind there and do it. Try that first. But when this happens your speed or mileage will not work. They work in tandem. I had to change my speedometer cable and somehow the cable just broke inside. My speedometer and odometer did not work. I put in the new cable and they both worked. One reason was that I hate to drive slow and was afraid of getting a speeding ticket. Besides it was an old car, so the mileage did not matter, but a speeding ticket would.
You could disconnect it from the transmission, but then you would have to go to a junk yard and cut the end of the cable that screws into the transmission. You would have a tranny plug with about one ince of cable sticking out. You would then take your speedometer cable out, tie it up, and then screw this one in from the junk yard to keep the tranny oil from leaking. This is good for driving for a long period of time. Hmmm, This works on rentals too, where they charge for excessive miles. Of course, I would never do nothing illegal like this. This is what I have heard. lol Rumors, urban legend. lol

on older cars, not sure about the newest ones, simplest thing is disconnect the speedometer cable from the transmission. you will have no odometer, but no speedometer either. to disable only the odometer, you have to take the speedometer out of the dash, open it up and remove it. the speedometer has a tamper seal on it, to break the seal is obvious sign of tampering, if anyone ever looks. possibly and very likely it is illegal.

That's dishonest you would sue if you got ripped off what makes you think you are above the law. In many car's today if you disconnect the speed sensor the transmission wont shift properly or not at all, You own a used car to be ethical you must take a loss just like everyone does.

Disconnect the speed sensor on the transmission. Now you have no speedometer, and if caught, say HI to bubba. Most cars have a odometer built in to the PCM so even if you switch the dash, you loose. Just don't play with it.

Just disconnect the vehicle speed sensor. This will disable the speedometer and odometer. If that is what you're talking about doing then it's not technically illegal, more like dishonest because its something that happens to any car that has a problem with their speed sensor, you're just making it happen.
P.S. This will also turn on your check engine light.

Legally? You can't. The only possible reason for wanting to disable the odometer is fraud. There are built-in indicators in all modern odometers to tell prospective purchasers of the vehicle of tampering.

the car is too new to disconnect. even if its disconnected, the odo is digital and the cars computer remembers the miles. the actual mileage the computer remembers will still appear even if you change the instrument cluster!
