In America, you don't get punitive damages for breach of contract.

So, if the contract was for $500,000, you prove a loss of $400,000, you get $400,000. Say you have an agreement to lease a building for $500K. Other side refuses or whatever, and you salvage $100K. You can sue the other side for that $400K you lost.
