From my experience, college English classes focus more on writing than reading. For an English major though, I guess it could be different. (I only took English Comp I and English Comp II) I'd recommend the Bible (you'll be surprised by how much it's referred to in College), some authors on more philosophical topics like Thomas Hobbes, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Blais Pascal. Something by Thomas Jefferson. Read something by Deborah Tannen as she will come up in several college courses. It doesn't matter much, in my opinion, what you read for your own leisure as long as you do. It's great. If you enjoy fiction, read it. Or, pick a topic you enjoy learning about and read on that.

I would talk to one of the English teachers in your school or your Guidance Counselor. They will be able to give you a list of books put out that people in your grade should read or should have read by the time they finish that grade. They also may be able to get you a list of books for higher education that you should read.

Also, showing them you are eager to prepare yourself will be handy when you need letters of recommendation or other resources.
