well if this is the fish.... like the cichlid then behind the head on the neck area it should be pinkish witch means its male and males are usualy bigger than females.

Is this a bird or a fish? You posted in Fish though I will assume th emistake was yours and you mean a bird. Birds do not have external genatalia, and it is necessary to see a vet or specialist to sex your bird. All their sex organs are inside thier bodies so you cannot tell by looking at their outward appearance.

Should you be speaking of a bird,the animal can only be sexed through a surgical procedure done by a vet.

Usually the males are more colorful than the females, more color and brighter colors
