A better question would be, why are the Devil Rays even bothering to go into the season? They are just terrible. I hope they move the franchise to Orlando where they will get better support and maybe have the money to pick up some decent ball players for a chance.

Simple answer is "lack of other options" i think they want to pencil in a reletive veteran because they would trust him more than a younger guy at this point. You never know, a lot of guys that didn't make it as starters or middle men have gone on to become great closers... I would think he'll have a short rope in that role, and maybe Edwin Jackson will get a chance at some point? I am basing that on nothing, just a hunch...
