Keep it simple. Do it to please yourself, but share it: if it pleases others that will be the icing on the cake. Let it be about something which really interests you, about which you want to express its qualities as they seem to you. It can not only express interest, but questioning, apprehension, joy, hopes- almost any emotion or thing. Decide whether to go for rhyme or just unrhyming lines that feel like an interesting sequence of beats, or stressed syllables, with rhythm, as in the words of songs you like. Stop when you are feeling it's a good expression of your feelings- keep it short, at least until you feel you are ready do more. I hope for your own pleasure and satisfaction in this ancient mode of verbal expression.

For me a poem has to have rhythm. It doesn't necessarily have to rhyme but it needs to hit my emotions. I think clarity of expression is important as well. I don't like to second guess what I'm reading about. I always look for what I term "poetic gems"in the text.

the best you can do is to write what you feel and anything else that might inspire you to do something amazing. If something pops into your head write it down. It might be a great poem.
