To become a freemason, you simply need to ask a member of a local lodge if you can submit an application. The only requirements are that you believe in a higher power, that you are an adult male, and that you are of good character. You do not need to be related to a Mason, and contrary to popular belief, they will not find you and ask you to join. YOU MUST ASK.

The best way to go about this is to look up your local lodge. Just do a google search for the "Grand Lodge of (your state)" and then you can either contact them or look on the site to find the lodge closest to you. Most lodges give a phone number and an email address, as well as who to contact to join. If you need any help finding this information, feel free to contact me and I will help you.

You husband will most likely be asked to meet with some of the members of the lodge before applying, and once the application has been submitted, they will check the references that he supplied and do a bit of checking up on him to find out if he is a good person. This investigation process is much like checking references for a job. He will find that once he meets the members, they will be very helpful in answering questions and will be happy that he is interested in the craft.

Melissa,

Freemasonry is not one organisation. There is Male only Freemasonry, Female only Masonry and Co-Masonry (Male and Female mixed).

If you use your web browser and search on the three options you will be able to compare and contrast.

They all have similar entry criteria, with the exception of gender.

21 years of age, trustworthy, of good character and no criminal record, you must profess a belief in a Supreme Being (although in France there is one Grand Lodge which does not insist upon this).

My Grand Lodge is a male only one, but if it would help you to find out what Freemasonry is, then take a look at our website and the others mentioned herein: www.grandlodgeofallengland.org

I hope that this helps.

Despite the other answers and that you are asking for your husband, let me enter this from our prospective: American Co-Masonry.

To become an American Co-Mason the candidate must be:

* A woman or man of age (usually 21 or older)
* A believer in a Supreme Being (which one is not an issue)
* Of any race
* Tolerant of other religions and races
* Of good reputation
* Willing to take an oath of obedience and secrecy
* Wanting to improve the world by improving themselves

To join, one has to get an application from Larkspur, CO and send it in filled out. A local Lodge will contact the applicant and interview (usually three) the candidate.

I will give you the link to our website for more information. Again, we admit women and men to all rights and privileges. If you are interested, please read more.

Best wishes,
A Master Mason
American Co-Masonry

Hiram Lodge (Santa Cruz, CA)
Amon Ra Lodge (Los Angeles, CA)
Sapientia Lodge of Research (Larkspur, CO)
Adamant Mark Lodge (Santa Cruz, CA)
