As far as I know, all constant flame, pilot-ignited gas fired appliances have a millivolt operated main gas valve. The millivolts to opertae the valve are generated by a thermocouple whch is heated by the pilot flame.

If this is what you have, more than lkely the thermocouple has died. Remove it ( not very difficult, usually) and take it to your local hardware stoe. Install the replacement, and enjoy the heat.

If the pilot light is actually burning then you obviously have gas but perhaps the pressure is low. Normally I wouldn't expect that but as you have 2 separate devices that aren't working correctly it is a possibility that it is a pressure problem. The thermocouple must be close enough to the flame to sense it prior to it allowing the gas to flow. (I assume you have used these previously at this location and they are jetted for natural gas or propane as appropriate)

The pilot needs to held on for over a minute to make sure it catches. So, light the pilot and hold it down for a little extra time if it is too cold.

Since your having trouble with both appliances, it sounds like you are not getting gas to either appliance. Have you or the gas company turned off the gas.....if you have any other gas appliances, are they working. Check the shut off valves, they may be turned off
