I've always thought it to be absurd that the Hollywood crowd doesn't ever take any responsibility for the negative effects of some of their movies. The standard irresponsible answer is that "movies simply reflect our culture, we can't be responsible for what people do after watching our movie." (or listening to our music, or reading our books, etc.). I think violent movies tend to increase violence in our society. But am I wrong?

I think it's a mixture of both. Things that we hear and see on TV have just as much influence on us as we have on TV and movies.
Violence is a fine example, but movie writers did not create violence. Violence already existed and writers decided to tap into that.
People have to be responsible for their own actions, and not look to movie stars and TV stars as role models. Just b/c you see someone do something on TV doesnt give you a permission slip to display those types of behaviors.

I thought I was the only one who ever gave thought to this kind of question you're asking. Movies simply reflect reality and they also create reality by influencing people, so it's both. Some producers grew up in rough neighborhoods and witness high crimes or bodies in front of their homes or on their way to school/work or had rough childhoods and decided to make a loosely based movie on the topic. Some producers decide to make movies that will influence people and it can be negative or positive but I believe that people have the right to choose whether they'll feed into what the movie is stating because it's a choice. You don't have to do anything you don't want to in any case whether it's drinking and driving or smoking a drug - same for a movie you choose to watch. However, I do agree with you that when people make certain movies that they know people will be influenced by, they should be held responsible for what it's stating and the influence it took out on regular people.

The problem is - we don't know. Studies on the subject are usually funded by parties with a vested interest in the answer.

There does, however, seem to be some evidence that violence depicted in movies may desensitize some people to violence. So, even though the movie doesn't cause a normally nonviolent person to act violently, it may "free" a violence prone individual to act out on their violent tendencies.
