Usually the difference is that when it says "infant" it is more concentrated than when it is a "children's" medicaiton. But still check with your doctor...and also, I don't think you should be giving your chld any cold medicine because most of them were recalled. ...Actually it was recalled because there was no real evidence shown that it helps children under the age of two. Also, those products have never been tested in children, so there is no way to know the true effects it has on a child's immune system, etc. The cold will run it's course...unless it's pneumonia it won't be life threatening. Turn on the humidifier, maybe put some vicks on her/his chest if s/he has a productive cough, and it should be gone in a few days.

Hi, I would ring the pharmacist on this one.Your baby is only 2lb from the dose/weight and these are usually an overestimate for public safety. Tylenol is safe, jsut make sure that the cough and cold mix doesn't already contain tylenol.I'm sure it is fine to use,t here are infant cough drops available, but it is only a quick phone call to the pharmacist and you will know for sure.

My daughter is a year and a half and is only 20 pounds. She is very small. I can give her the tylenol and dimatap cold and cough. She gets a half a teaspoon of the dimatap cold and cough. I would check with your doctor though.

This medication contains tylenol, decongestant (phenylephrine) and cough suppressant (dextromethorphan). It temporarily relieves fever, pain and nose congestion. It can have many side effects (shaky movements, agitation, liver damage) and does not cure or shorten the symptoms of a common cold. I would not recommend using this medication in a 5 month old. A slight fever (under 102 taken rectally) is helpful because it is her immune system trying to kill the virus. Use normal saline nose drops and a bulb syringe to clean the snot out of her nose. It is normal as a mom to want to "give her something" but it is really not necessary or helpful to her. If her symptoms are more severe (high fever, wheezing, not drinking or eating) then you should take her in to get her checked out.

It was recently in the news that cough medicine for children under two is actually detrimental to the child. I would opt for baby tylenol only. The cough suppressants are only going to drag it out longer. Make sure she's well-hydrated. I found that baby Vicks worked well when my son had a cough. I'd just rub it on his chest and it seemed to calm him.
Call the pediatrician. He/she may be able to recommend an alternative.

They say ask your doctor~!! I had great results with my 22 week old son with half the recommended dose for the next age bracket- but without the cough and cold variety- best check with a Doc.

I wouldn't mess with the cold medicine without the pediatrician's okay. Regular Tylenol is safe though, as long as it is only 1 dropper. You'll be surprised, just the Tylenol alone works well for cold symptoms.

No. It's not okay. You must be very careful when it comes to newborns & medicine--especially tylenol. If she's in need of medication call either the doctor's 24 hr nurse line or the pharmacy & ask. It's best to just schedule a doctor's appointment ASAP!! & let the doctor diagnose her. It could be just a cold, but with children it's very hard to tell. Be very careful. I would hate for anything to happen to your child by way of medication. Good Luck!
