I keep 4 large Mystery snails in my tank. I have noticed quite often that when they are sleeping they close their cover and float thru the tank. I am always concerned when I see this because I cannot tell immediately if they are dead or not....and then the next morning (I count them) they are travelling all over the tank eating the lettuce leaves or blanched zucchini slices I added to the tank for them.

It is important that you keep an eye on snails in any aquarium because they will foul the water badly if they are dead. Have had it happen - smelled to high heaven - quickly made water changes so no fish would die. If you add snails to a planted tank be prepared for them to eat all your plants. I made a divider in my tank to keep them away from my pretty greens.

Where did you get snails;they are not in the stores? Are they the large type? It is normal for them to float around while looking for a food source. If there is only a shell, then it's gone. Otherwise it should find a comfortable place ,such as a rock, decoration or glass side to stick onto.

Ofcourse it is normal!!!! The snail floats on water upside down.Because of snail the tank remains clean as it eats the leftover food.So it is normal. They remain at that place for longer time.

Maybe it was too light, or a fish took it off the side of the tank. It will reattach itself so don't worry.

Floating is normal. I have noticed when they die the shell becomes empty. So I am sure he is fine.

Sometimes they will sit in one place forever too and you will think he is dead - but if it is not empty - he is prob fine.
