There are a lot of good suggestions already, and i have to agree with all of them, Mercedes Lackey is my all time favorite author, but i love Marion Zimmer Bradley, Jennifer Roberson, Piers Anthony, Mark Anthony, Irene Radford, Dennis McKierrnan, Anne Mccafferty, Todd Mccafferty, Robin Hobb, Jodi Lyn Nye, CS Freidman, CJ Cherryh, Tamora Pierce. I also like to get Anthologies, which are a collection of Short Stories from lots of different authors, so you can get a chance to see how you like the writings before you just start buying who series. Some Anthologies, are the Sword and Soceress's Edited by Marion Zimmer Bradley, that is where a lot of these authors started, like Jennifer Roberson, Jodi, and Mercedes. there are also other Themed ones, like Castle Fantastic, or Wizard Fantastic, and all the stories have something to do with the main theme.
Have fun trying out some new authors, I hope you find some here to travel and adventure with. ENJOY

I really enjoy some of R.A. Salvatore's works although many would probably say they're pulp fiction. It's not everyone's cup of tea but I like his characters and the books are really easy to read. Besides that Wheel of Time is great but will have you reading for the next few years. Terry Pratchet's books are always fun, I would recommend the color of magic series.

It would be really helpful to put in an author or series you've liked, as there are so many to choose from.
I like Jennifer Roberson's Chronicles of the Cheysuli, Stephen Donaldson's short stories and Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, most of Mercedes Lackey's stuff, Roger Zelazny, LE Modesitt, and Marion Zimmer Bradley.

All of Piers Anthony's books. There are a series of books The "Incarnations of Immortality" that are fun to read. Anne McCaffrey's "Dragon Riders of Pern" is awesome. Anything Pern is good.
Have a fantastic time. You have a lot to choose from.

Gee could you be a little less specific. Get a "Best of.." book from Barnes and Nobles and read 20 or more authors' work (short stories) then you can clue in on someone whose writing you like.
