I went to a website recently that had an advertisement for some dating site and on the advertisement it said "Find Singles In (My City)"? How did this website ad do this?

any site you visit can check your IP address. your IP is registered to the company you get your internet access from and you can look up their address online for free.

try it out -- go to

http://whatsmyip.org/

and get your IP, then go to

http://www.arin.net/whois/

and look up the registered owner's information.

basically, an advertising banner just grabs these two pieces of information and tells you to "find singles in blah-blah".

don't worry, they don't have any of your personal information.
