im going to go with ergonomics, which is the science of man and machine and how to make them connect more efficiently. There was probably some study done that shows that when trying to compute numbers should be a certain way on calculators, and when dialing phones the numbers go a certain way. Probably the same reason why certain numbers produce certain tones on phones.
