Is it the body that derives joy from looking at a thing of beauty, or is it the Atma (soul)? What is it that relishes the good food that is consumed - the body or the spirit? What is it that enjoys fragrance or is moved by beautiful music?

it is the body with aatma in it. you are alive till you have atma in you thus the body works .The body receives all your joyful emotions. Atma sees what happens. you can sometimes feel it too. just se what happens to your bodyand that will be your karma. seeing is not thru your eyes but the inner soul. when you feel you are very happy observe yourself how you react and how you laugh and how you enjoy .you will be able to difeerentiate yourself from the body that is getting happy.well it sure is an interesting question. i could not explain you really well because this subject needs a lot of knowledge and moreover the best person who could explain you would be a person with very experienced knowledge.

Well, I remember reading one time that, for men, looking at a beautiful woman has the same chemical effect as cocaine, albiet to a lesser degree. I think the soul and the body are intertwined so much that it would be near impossible to differentiate where one begins and the other ends. Personally, I think that one takes pleasure and then triggers the other. I.E. The soul is moved by beautiful music and then the chemicals in the body follow suit.

Both the soul and body work simultaneously. It is the body that lusts for food and sensuality. The soul seeks out harmony and satisfaction. While the body is lusting for gluttony, the soul whispers balance and health. The body desires the sexual pleasures. The soul finds rest in companionship and unity. The fragrance of flowers and perfumes are alluring to the body. The soul is alerted by aromas and consumes them as memories of a time or moment. Music is the soul. The notes felt and heard bring the soul to life and the body and soul become one, for a moment.

The body is a precipitated form of Atman, like a salt crystal in a super saturated solution. The duality of your question is misleading. But one does not derive joy from the food, but from the fact that the food enlivens some positive aspect of Atman (ananda).

Your question assumes that the body and the soul are mutually exclusive. They are not. They are part of one and the same being. At some point we will be parted from our physical existence though, but never from our soul. The soul absorbs all of the experiences of the body.

This is a great question!

And it's an excellent tool for contemplating in what ways the body and soul are NOT really separate things at all.

It is our body, which includes our mind and whole self. In ALL history, there has NEVER been ANY verifiable evidence to even suggest that there is such a thing as a soul or spirit.
