It could last forever if you don't find out what is going on underneath the selfishness...

It could have always been there and just showed itself...

Or

It could be triggered by someone...

Or

It could be triggered by something that happened...

But, you can't pull up the weed without grabbing the roots...

This all depends on the person. It could last a while or just be a short phase. Ask the person why they are being so selfish and why the change?

Unfortunately someone does not automatically become selfish there is a reason for this, so you need to find out what that reason is. Maybe the problem is reversible, maybe not. If not move on because that person may have already been selfish and just now showing their true colors.

Depends what all of a sudden made him selfish. It might be a phase and it might not be. Sometimes people are so nice and get crapped on by everyone so they eventually get fed up and start being like everyone else. Talk to them and see if you can help, they might need a friend.

Could you provide a few more details? Otherwise we're just blindfolded swinging at pinatas here...

Selfishness can be caused by a lot of things, but in my experience, it has a lot to do with low empathy for others.

If this person grew up in a terrible family environment with abuse and where basic needs were not being met (or being met conditionally) then mentally, they may be operating in "survival mode", in which they are just completely focused on taking care of themselves.

To have empathy for other's feelings (in order to not act selfishly), a person first has to get in touch with their own feelings to acknowledge and maybe even finish grieving over the suffering and deprivation they experienced in their past.

What makes you think it's a phase? Selfishness can be learned. It can also be a symptom of mental illness. We don't know enough about the situation to help you here.

i used to be the most generous person alive. i would give the shirt off my back to help a total stranger because i thought it's was the right thing to do.

however over the years, i learned my lesson about being generous. i found out that people are self centered and ungrateful. they took advantage of my generosity for their own self serving needs, then wouldn't give me the time of day when i was no longer needed.

so i wouldn't call it a "phase", i would call it "experience".

Maybe this person isn't being selfish, but standing up for themselves, and sick of letting people walking all over them.

Just until they move on. That is a red flag that should tell you that you have some real problems.
