It depends on the Offensive strategy, the team, and geography.
Most coaches adhere to letters or numbers reather than nicknames.
x, y, z are common.
x is the "wide out" or wide receiver.
y is the tight end
z is the slot receiver.
h is the halfback.
Defensively, we identify them by numbers...and there are two different number systems.
My team goes from outside in...1, 2, and 3 by eligibility.
1 is the wide out on one side...while 1 is also the slot on the other side.
2 being the tightend or even a secondary slot
3 would be an eligible halfback...a third slot as in trips.
Other teams go from left to right.
1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
After that...nicknaming is geographical and coaches preferance.
As a defensive coordinator...I identify a "threat" receiver as "Cowboy", a receiver with good hands by his number, and a fast receiver as "outlaw". This way if I call a man coverage...my players know exactly who I want covered in any situation based on our pre-game reviews and practice.
I hope this helps.
