I recently just did a project/presentation on this subject, so this information is still fresh in my mind. The song is actually a nursery ryhme. It's called "Ring-A-Round the Rosy". The children during the Black Death period made it up to pass the time, as they were left on their own to take care of themselves. They (the children) were affected by the plague physically and mentally, and this is a good example on how.

Ring around the rosy
Pocket full of posies
Ashes, ashes
We all fall down!

Sounds like an innocent nursery ryhme, doesn't it? But the truth is, it's so much more complicated and disturbing than that.

"Ring around the rosy": rosary beads were believed to give you God's help. people wore them as protection from the plague.

"Pocket full of posies": it was believed that the disgusting odors coming from the rotting bodies caused the plage. the "doctors" of the time would carry around posies to protect themselves from their dying patients.

"Ashes, ashes": since their were so many people dying, digging graves and having ceremonies became out of the question. as a result, the church would burn the dead bodies.

"We all fall down": dead. this one is pretty much self-explanatory.

I really hope this helps you out. Now you not only know the rhyme, but you know the meaning behind it as well!

It's a morbid little ditty about the pneumonic plague. Sometime in the last century though, the words were changed some to make it a little kid's play song. The original goes like this:

'Ring-a-ring-a-rosie' (round red marks on the skin-a symptom of the plague)
'Pocket full of Posie' (carrying flowers was supposed to ward off the plague)
'Achoo achoo' (sneezing-another symptom)
'We all fall down' (we all die)

the above answerers are right except the rosie is the swollen lump that appears in the armpits of people who are beginning to show signs they have fatally contracted the black death

It's Ring around the rosie, pocket full of posies, ashes to ashes, we all fall down.
