Johnny Blaze is the unwilling host of the Living spirit of vengeance, by making a deal with the devil.(mephisto) for his father that has cancer, to let him live, not knowing that johnny made the deal, crash Simpson tried a stunt that i think will be in the movie( maybe the helicopter one) well crash died, and johnny became the ghost rider for as long as he would live, (now being supernatural and all...it means eternal) the powers keep him in peak condition and he hunts down creatures of darkness( blackheart and others of the dominion of hell) ....this the simple answer....

I wouldn't classify him as a vigilante. Batman chooses to go after "evil", while the Ghost Rider has no choice. When Johnny Blaze made the deal with the devil in order to save someone he loves, he was unaware of the price he would pay. He became the "Spirit of Vengeance". I guess you could say that he was less of a vigilante and more of a force of supernatural punishment.

Well lets see the Ghost Rider gets his power from Satan. Yeah I guess thats right up there with Batman. What are you thinking man. He is a vigilante of the highest order not at all like Batman. Ghost Rider is more of a pawn of Satan while Batman is a slave to revenge the lost of his family by making all that live the lives of his parents killer pay.

In essence, all superheroes are vigilantes, but no, he's not like Batman.
Bats has no powers - just oodles of cash to pay for all his high tech toys and tons of training in just about every field you can think of.
Ghost Rider has supernatural powers borne of the deal he made with the Devil, Mephisto, and thus Johnny Blaze is tied to Zarathos. In his unholy form, he controls brimstone and rides a bike of flame, wears a chain that he can use in just about any manner imaginable, and has a Penance Stare that punishes evil doers by inflicting the same pain they have done to others tenfold.
All because Johnny wanted to save his sweetheart....

Ghost Rider is the "Sprit of Vengence" so I would say that he handels criminals and evil-doers much like Batman but he punishes criminals and makes them suffer, GR's main foe is the wicked and supernatural.
Batman in contrast kicks their #@@ and turns them over to the law. Batman does not kill people on purpose. So they are kind of the same yet different.
In Addition, Batman has no powers and Ghost Rider is a Force of super natural power.

NO! Ghost Rider is not motivated in the same way Batman is. I would say you definitely CANNOT classify him as a Batman-like figure. So don't even go there, buddy!

I'd classify the character as "lame." Or maybe "boring." Batman would be nowhere near those categories.
And strictly speaking, all of the superheroes that aren't working for government agencies (so, pretty much all of them that I can think of) are vigilantes. No one game them the authority to beat up criminals.

I'd copmpare him to Spawn,, suckered into a bad deal with the Devil as payback stuck in the army of darkness as an officer. Batman, is just a manic depressive, who has never been treated.
