I actually have done this several times. Use acetone. It works like a charm.

The store Dollar Tree sells a product called Awsome. It is in a clear container with red letters. This stuff will clean anything. A friend of mine told me about it and now it is the only cleaner I buy. It is amazing and does every job.

From a paint store buy either acetone or MEK (methyl ethyl keytone). Either should remove the old marker.

Try nail polish remover on a paper towel or soft cloth - works great for me! If that's not potent enough, try a solvent like Oops - you should be able to find it at Home Depot or similar places.

I have used a product called Krudd Kutter, sold at K-mart and Lowes, it removes anything and is water based, and easy to use.

Try Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser....it seems to work on everything!
