Follow the money. Check their campaign funds. See who's working for them and who they're working for.
Most of all, pay no attention to their web sites, speeches or interviews on Sunday talk shows or clips on the news. All of that is about persuasion -- not fact.

I watch "meet the press" with Tim Russert. Sunday mornings.
He asks well researched, tough questions to pretty much everyone- so I've found him pretty unbiased. He just did a full hour show with 'smilin' John Edwards. I'm sure that sooner or later every candidate will be waltzing through his show.

I go to each canidates own website and get their views,and if they dont post them,I dont vote for them.Some of them will post their voting records.
