depends when u r planning your trip
during the summer months its gets pretty hot, so pack summery clothes, evenings can get sometimes "coldish" so pack light weight jacket for that, also a pair of long jeans as well.
winter, it gets cold especially at night time, so pack coat for that, during the day people wear long sleeves.
there are no clothes that need to be avoided, its up to an individual what one wants to wear.

Anything is fine. People in South Africa dont judge others on clothing at all. Ive noticed the girls wear very skimpy clothing. I'm more old fashioned and love to wear jeans and a t-shirt. Skirts are nice too. But you will come in June and that's winter time. So keep a jacket in mind and a jersey as well as some boots. Happy happy!

South Africans aren't terribly traditional. The country isn't predominantly Islamic - so there's no modesty code for women - and casual attire is the norm. Most South African suburban malls are similar to ones you'd find in America, Australia, and Canada. And the clothes on offer are probably the same ones you have. Unless you travel into isolated rural areas or the independent kingdoms of Swaziland or Lesotho, you won't see tribal dress outside of performances specifically designed for tourists. Although there are specialist shops where you can acquire traditional clothing, I wouldn't go overboard with it as a visitor. If you walk down a chic Cape Town neighborhood in your African garb, they'll look at you as if you just beamed down from the Starship Enterprise. And that's not the sort of attention you want. As for diseases, I wouldn't count on a garment to protect you. Though you should dress for outdoor activity, since South African vacations usually involve enjoying the country's natural beauty. Most diseases are airbourne or liquid (e.g. water, blood). If you're going to Kruger National Park, you'll need malaria pills and mosquito repellant. While the government swears that tap water in South Africa is perfectly safe, those who can afford it often drink bottled water or use a filter.

It really all depends when and where you're going you're going! Summer can get hot, so shorts and a t-shirt will be fine! A lot of people wear jeans all-year round! Winter can also be pretty cold! Durban doesn't get as cold as other areas in winter (June-August). Light-clothing in summer, don't forget a raincoat because it rains in summer! And winter; jeans, jackets, jumpers, etc!

I used to live as a child in South Africa. It is a rather dangerous country so be careful when you travel to be with someone at all times. Robberies are a common thing.

As for clothing the white Afrikaans and other white africans tend to wear clothes just the same as any american as do the black population for that matter.

The only advice I would have is to not wear clothes that are too skimpy and could attract unwanted people. When I lived their I manly wore jeans and shirts. Then again I was a child..but my mother who worked wore slacks and nice dress shirts to work.

If you go to the coast or up to Pretoria which is 10,000 feet above sea level it can get california kindof cold like in the 55 to 60's range so a light jacket would be good. However if you are going to the game reserves it can get pretty warm if it is summer.

Note that South Africas winter season falls exactly during our summer season. So bring some jackets if you are going on June/July.

Don't wear safari clothes like khaki's and stuff. people are gonna stare! But jeans are cool but it can get hot, so you might want to bring shorts!

Wear sports trousers from Nike, Adidas,Levis you will be looking good and very normal to everybody because if you wear things like Gucci,Versace or D&G there are some people(ganstas or robbers) who will try to take your clothes by force

I definitley recommend wearing khaki shorts, hiking boots with knee-high socks, pith helmet and round out your ensemble with a tee shirt with the "oranje-blanje-blou" on it. Just kidding!

The exact same clothing as one would wear anywhere else in the world! There is nothing different about the clothes we wear here unless you are from one of the Zulu tribes or something and then you wear like deer skins and stuff;-)

You will find all international brands here, so wear what you would wear in UK or USA.(Just consider the weather)

Wear clothes AS SKIMPY or THAT COVERS AS MUSH as you do over there. No difference here.
