hi,

I am 17 going on 18. I want to change my legal name when i turn 18, which is right before i go off for college. The reason I want to change my legal name is that my grandparents gave me the name (big mistake) and it is very differcult to pronoun, hence, seldom anyone calls me it. Since i started grade school, i have been known as Amy, which is name that i would like to be change to.

Go to the Social Security Office and request a change of name form, you'll get a get a new birth certificate and new ss card (same #) new name. Also get your state id or license in your new name too. Your parents may have to go with you to confirm the information. You need to bring your original ss# card and birth certificate. There is a fee as well. I did this too, right before I graduated high school. Didn't want any school records to have old name, especially my diploma.
Check on line for your state Social Security and/or Hall of records to confrim what info you need to change your name.

in most countries, you have to use the new name for few months and then register it at the registrar general's office, and then publish in a news paper.
