In flowering plants the seeds develop as a result of the actions of the male and female gametophytes. A seed contains the embryo that will be the new sporophyte. The stored food is from the female gametophyte.

The seed develops in the ovule, which is part of the pistil. The seed is the beginning of the sporophyte phase of the cycle.
