In today's market, I think it is almost definite that the deal for Zito at $16 is a bargain and a smart one at that. Remember Kevin Brown got the same money per year from the Dodgers, and that was nearly a decade ago. Zito is consistent, doesn't and hasn't been serious injured, and he is a guy that is relatively easy to get along with in the clubhouse, and he has a clear head. So this is my choice for the best deal this past offseason.

Best deal? Probably Atlanta robbing Seattle for Rafael Soriano. Only having to give up Horacio Ramirez? Who is readily replaceable with Chen or any other so-so inning eater? Even if Soriano only works out as a middle reliever, this was probably a good trade. I don't know if it counts as a deal though, maybe more of a steal.
Also, clearly one of the above posters does not understand baseball in the sightest. Matsuzaka was one of the WORST deals? Looking at the free agent market, he is one of the best deals. At about 16 million a year, he's earning 50% more than Gil Meche. And I would trade 2 Meche's for him. Plus only half of his money counts towards payroll- meaning he'll probably end up being cheaper for the Red Sox than Meche or Suppan or some other half-baked starter would be.

The Phillies acquiring Freddy Garcia from the White Sox. They got him cheap.... The Rangers also should come in a close second acquiring phenom Brandon McCarthy from for three minor leaugers. There was not a free agent signing that could be considered best deal unless best deal is defined as which player got the most out of a team!

I'd have to say that the Freddy Garcia for Gavin Floyd trade has to rank as the best or close to the best deal of 2007. The Phillies got themselves a potential 20 game winner for a number of years to come in exchange for a young pitcher who hasn't performed in Philly.

The price was high but if Matsuzaka proves to be a long term winner for the Red Sox, the deal will be worth it.

The Tigers getting Sheffield for 3 minor leaguers. Now they have a thunder in the middle of their already-solid lineup.
