Firmware is software that is burned onto a ROM, PROM, EPROM or EEPROM integrated circuit. (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (and all of the truncations))
This firmware would be in the DVD-ROM drive and it controls the operation of the drive under direction of control signals received from the computer.
A driver is software on the computer that interfaces the computer to the DVD-ROM drive.

Firmware is the information programmed into the devices hardware, that makes the device operate. Drivers allow the firmware/device to interact with the operating system. Usually a generic DVD-rom driver is used in Windows--you don't need a driver install disk usually. The OS recognizes it. The firmware id device specific. Firmware can very for each device based on what type of features are included in the device itself.

a CD (Compact Disk) can hold up to 700MB of data while a DVD (Digital Versatile Disk) holds about 4.7GB. So basically, a DVD is a bigger version of a CD. They look about the same, but you will need a DVD drive to be able to read that format. If you have a DVD-ROM drive then it can also read CD's (downward compatible) but you cannot read a DVD if you only have a CD-ROM drive. There are also other formats available now like Dual Layer (DVD-DL) which is 8.5GB and Blu-Ray (BD) which holds 25GB and 50GB for Dual Layer versions. Basically, all of these disks are a media that can hold data (video, audio, files) and the difference is the amount it can store. Additional Info: the initials "PC CD(or DVD) ROM" just means Personal Computer Compact Disk (or Digital Versatile Disk) Read Only Memory.

Firmware is the software of the hardware itself...the controller chips and such. This is occasionally updated by manufacturers but most people don't both to update the firmware on their devices unless they have problems that newer firmware is supposed to fix.
A driver is what Windows needs to see and use the device as intended.

Driver: small program used by Windows to communicate with hardware.
Firmware: small program used by devices to run internal instructions (so the device knows how to do the great things you want it to do).
Example: Windows uses a driver to tell a CD drive wo write to a cd, the cd drive uses the firmware to know how to write to the CD.
