A major in Biology is general and covers unessary things(ecology...) while Molecular biology is more specific and deals with DNA, genetics and proteins. Which is better for pre-med and why between these two majors?

Honestly, you can major anything you want for pre-med...but the best major is something that makes your application stand out and that gives you a competitive GPA.

For Example you would not want to major in Biochemistry unless you think you can pull a 3.5 or above in that...

and if you do a major in humanities it would be better if you do a double major or a minor.

Majoring in humanities or social sciences show that you are a well rounded person and it will help during hte interviews especially if you take courses that involves current events becasue there will be thesis you will have to write and reports as well so it will really help when it comes to the interview...

So going back to your question, if I had to choose between Biology or Molecular Biology..I would just stick with Molecular Biology because there are many Biology majors but not that many that have specialized bio majors as with Molecular biology...

Hope that helps!

I second the above, major in something you find interesting. Many students at top universities majored outside of the sciences. You will get all the biology you need in medical school, and since you get a simplified view there for the sake of brevity you will not be missing out on much as compared to your fellow classmates. Biochem and molecular biology majors are almost the same thing, the only difference will be inorganic chemistry exposure for biochemistry but that's really it. If you like biology don't go to med school, go to grad school or do an MSTP. Molecular biology is popular among pre-meds because they mistakenly believe it will help them get into med school, but the ones that do take an MCAT class for the help, volunteered in another country or local clinic for a year or two, and did research in the sciences. I would think literature majors are on top of it for preparing to go to med school since you have to just to sit down, suck it up, and read the days away.

Molecular biology, of course, as medicine is functional biology. I, as an evolutionary biologist, would not think ecology " useless ". You will have some introductory biology classes. Pay attention when the evolutionary sections are reached. Then, perhaps, as a bio-medician, you will not end up artificially selecting our parasites, as some of your medical predecessors have done.
